Context :
PETERCEM has been requested to install one of its Current Sensors outside the power cabinet.
This rough application exposes the Current Sensor to rain, conductive dust, and UV light.
Functionalities developed:
To face the rain and conductive dust request, PETERCEM developed an option based on its existing HRS2000 current sensors.
This option brings an IP65 qualification to the sensors.
It uses an updated version of the existing casing, fully compatible with standard HRS2000 mounting specifications, and a robust secondary connection.
To face the outside environment, PETERCEM had to select a qualified plastic material for the product casing which also answer to all applications’ qualification levels : UL and Fire & Smoke (EN45545) being the most relevant.
Applications:
Railway Energy Measuring Function. The European regulation has been updated in the past years and trains should have the possibility to measure the energy they use for optimization and invoice purposes. The Energy Measuring Function uses a current and a voltage measurement. Those measurements should be done at the closest position to the pantograph or third rail. The PETERCEM IP65 solution answers the request.
Downsizing is a fact in power electronics, therefore the power cabinets have less volume and the integration might be an issue. However, physics doesn’t change and bus bars cannot be shrinked. Therefore, with qualified current sensing technologies the downsizing has limits as the sensors’ shape depends on the bus bar size. One solution can be to place the current sensor outside the power cabinet.
Whatever the challenge, the PETERCEM team can support you.
